The Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is one of the world’s bio diverse regions with a profusion of exotic plants and animals including the endangered Mountain Gorilla, which it is famously known for.
The forest was also home to an indigenous group of people, the Batwa pygmies for thousands of years. The history of these small-statured people is long and rich. The Batwa survived by hunting small game using arrows or nets and gathering plants and fruit in the rain forest. They lived in huts constructed of leaves and branches, moving frequently in search of fresh supplies of food. The Batwa lived in harmony with the forest and its creatures, including the mountain gorillas, for millennia.
In 1992, Bwindi forest became a national park and World Heritage Site to protect the 350 endangered mountain gorillas within its boundaries; this greatly changed the lives of the Batwa pygmies forever. Since they had no title to land, they were given no compensation. The Batwa became conservation refugees in an unfamiliar, unforested world.
Many thanks to some foundations and donations which help support these people like providing them with clean water, healthcare services, accommodation for some, schools among others. And also to the tourists who visit their communities and support them by buying their locally made handicrafts and some who offer them gifts like clothes, shoes and scholastic materials for school going children. This gesture of responsible travelers is greatly appreciated by the Batwa and they get to appreciate tourism and conservation activities in their region.
The Batwa are always excited to welcome their visitors with their folklores and also demonstrate to how they lived in the forest; how they hunted, how they made fire and also share about their culture, which is interesting to know about. So, visitors get an insight of how the Batwa lived in this great thick misty forest.
