Sport fishing on Lake Victoria

Sport fishing on Lake Victoria

Lake Victoria supports Africa's largest inland fishery, with the majority of the catch being the invasive Nile perch, which was introduced in the Lake in the 1950s. The fresh water lake is home to several fish species which makes it a good fishing area. Some of the fish include Singida tilapia and Victoria tilapia which are now endangered species. Other commonly observed species included: Marbled lungfish, Elephant-snout fish, Ripon barbel, African sharptooth catfish, silver butter catfish and Semutundu (Bagrus docmak).

The activity is done all year round with exception of the April/May rainy season. The commonly caught fish is the Nile perch which is from approximately 8-80 kg in weight....
