Axum or Aksum is a city in the northern part of Ethiopia. The original capital of the Kingdom of Aksum, it is one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in Africa. Axum was a naval and trading power that ruled the region from about 400 BCE into the 10th century. Axum is full of historical sites which include the Northern Stelae Field with the 4th-century obelisks that lend the area its name. St. Mary's of Zion Cathedral, the Chapel of the Tablet – the legendary home of the Ark of Covenant, the ruins of Dungur, better known as the Queen of Sheba's Palace and the ancient tombs of Ethiopian kings are other sites you will enjoy during your stay.
