Katwe Salt Lake Visit

Lake Katwe is known all over east Africa for its considerable salt production and has been producing salt for many years. The lake is found within an explosion crater in the formerly active volcanic area north-east of Lake Edward and south-east of Lake George, in Queen Elizabeth National Park. It is in a small town of Katwe and covers an area of around eight square miles.

The shores are lined with small ponds or pans of water from which salt is extracted from the bottom in a process called salt panning. The pans are usually taken care of by women and it’s the men who go into the lake.
